Exley earned a [Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts_in_Architectural_Studies) with [first-class honours](/source/first-class_honours) from [Newcastle University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape](/source/Newcastle_University_School_of_Architecture%2C_Planning_and_Landscape) in 1985, and a [Master of Architecture](/source/Master_of_Architecture) from the [University of Pennsylvania](/source/University_of_Pennsylvania) in 1990.  Prior to founding his own firm in 1994, he worked for [Skidmore, Owings & Merrill](/source/Skidmore%2C_Owings_%26_Merrill) in Chicago and London and with [Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates](/source/Venturi%2C_Scott_Brown_and_Associates) in Philadelphia.
