**Peter Desmond** (23 November 1926 in [Cork](/source/Cork_(city)), Ireland – July 1990) was an Irish [footballer](/source/Association_football). Desmond played for several clubs in the [League of Ireland](/source/League_of_Ireland) and the [English League](/source/Football_League). As an international, Desmond also played for [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_football_team_(FAI)).

Desmond made all four appearances for Ireland while playing for [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.). He made his international debut in a 3–0 win against [Finland](/source/Finland_national_football_team) on 8 September 1949 at [Dalymount Park](/source/Dalymount_Park) in a [World Cup](/source/1950_FIFA_World_Cup) qualifier.

Desmond was also a member of the Ireland team that defeated [England](/source/England_national_football_team) [2–0](/source/England_v_Ireland_(1949)) at [Goodison Park](/source/Goodison_Park), becoming the first non-[UK](/source/United_Kingdom) team to beat England at home. Ireland took the lead in the 33rd minute when Desmond, after collecting a pass from [Tommy O'Connor](/source/Tommy_O'Connor), was brought down in the England penalty area; [Con Martin](/source/Con_Martin) then converted the subsequent penalty kick.

Desmond made just two more international appearances for Ireland. They came on 9 October 1949 in a 1–1 draw with [Finland](/source/Finland_national_football_team) and on 13 November 1949 in 3–1 defeat to [Sweden](/source/Sweden_men's_national_football_team). Both these games were World Cup qualifiers.
