He was the son of the language teacher Peter Denys (sometimes Denyss), who was himself the son of a Swiss emigrant.<ref name="pastellists.com">{{cite web|url=http://www.pastellists.com/Articles/Denys.pdf|format=PDF|title=Dictionary of the pastellists before 1800|author=Neil Jeffares|website=Pastellists.com|access-date=7 July 2022}}</ref>

Denys was [High Sheriff of Northamptonshire](/source/High_Sheriff_of_Northamptonshire) in 1812.

Denys married his pupil, Lady Charlotte Fermor (1766–1835), daughter of [George Fermor, 2nd Earl of Pomfret](/source/George_Fermor%2C_2nd_Earl_of_Pomfret).<ref name="pastellists.com"/> With her income of £4,000 a year, he bought [Sloane Place](/source/Sloane_Place) in London, and [Fremington](/source/Fremington%2C_North_Yorkshire), Yorkshire.<ref name="pastellists.com"/>

Their son was the politician, [Sir George Denys, 1st Baronet](/source/Sir_George_Denys%2C_1st_Baronet) (1788–1857).
