# Peter Daane

**Peter Daane** (March 26, 1835 – January 7, 1914) was a [Dutch American](/source/Dutch_Americans) immigrant, businessman, and [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin) pioneer. He was a member of the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly), representing southern [Sheboygan County](/source/Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin) during the [1873 session](/source/26th_Wisconsin_Legislature).

## Biography

Peter Daane was born in [Westkapelle](/source/Westkapelle,_Netherlands), [Zeeland](/source/Zeeland), in the [Netherlands](/source/United_Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands). As a child in 1842, he emigrated with his family to the [United States](/source/United_States) and settled at [Pultneyville, New York](/source/Pultneyville,_New_York). In 1847, they moved west to [Milwaukee](/source/Milwaukee), [Wisconsin Territory](/source/Wisconsin_Territory), then north to [Sheboygan County, Wisconsin](/source/Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin), where they settled on a farm in the town of [Holland](/source/Holland,_Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin). Daane was educated in the public schools of New York and Wisconsin and went to work as a merchant.[1]

In the second year of the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War), Daane volunteered for service in the [Union Army](/source/Union_Army) and was enrolled as a sergeant in Company F in the [27th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment](/source/27th_Wisconsin_Infantry_Regiment). He was later promoted to [first sergeant](/source/First_sergeant), and was commissioned [first lieutenant](/source/First_lieutenant_(United_States)) in July 1864.[2] Daane served with the regiment in the [western theater of the war](/source/Western_Theater_of_the_American_Civil_War), participating in the [Vicksburg campaign](/source/Vicksburg_campaign) and campaigns in Alabama and Arkansas.[3]

After the war, Daane served as assessor of the town of Holland and chairman of the Holland Town Board. In 1873, Daane served in the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) and was a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)).[1] In 1879, Daane bought a mill, elevator, and lumberyard in [Oostburg, Wisconsin](/source/Oostburg,_Wisconsin). He also served as postmaster of Oostburg, Wisconsin. Daane died in Oostburg, Wisconsin of a heart ailment.[4]
