He was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who bowled right-arm [off break](/source/off_break). He was born in [Murree](/source/Murree), [Punjab Province](/source/Punjab_Province_(British_India)), in the [British Raj](/source/British_Raj) (today in Pakistan). He was educated at [Haileybury and Imperial Service College](/source/Haileybury_and_Imperial_Service_College) in England.

While studying at [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University), Close made his [first-class](/source/first-class_cricket) debut for [Cambridge University Cricket Club](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club) against [Glamorgan](/source/Glamorgan_County_Cricket_Club) in 1964.
