# Peter Burchard

**Peter Burchard** (March 1, 1921 – July 3, 2004)[1] was an [author](/source/Author), free-lance designer, and [illustrator](/source/Illustrator). He wrote the book *[One Gallant Rush](/source/One_Gallant_Rush)* (1965), about Colonel [Robert Gould Shaw](/source/Robert_Gould_Shaw) and the [54th Massachusetts Regiment](/source/54th_Massachusetts_Regiment), the first African-American unit in the Union Army. It was adapted for the 1989 film *[Glory](/source/Glory_(1989_film)),* which won numerous awards.[1]

## World War II

Burchard served on [convoys](/source/List_of_World_War_II_convoys#North_Atlantic_Convoys) in the North Atlantic during [World War II](/source/World_War_II). During this time, his drawings were published by *[Yank](/source/Yank,_the_Army_Weekly)* magazine.[1]

## Books

Burchard primarily wrote children's books about [slavery](/source/Slavery_in_the_United_States), [abolitionism](/source/Abolitionism_in_the_United_States), and the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War). He wrote 26 books and illustrated over 100.[1]

His book *[One Gallant Rush](/source/One_Gallant_Rush): Robert Gould Shaw and His Brave Black Regiment*, was the basis for the Oscar-winning 1989 film *[Glory](/source/Glory_(1989_film))*.
