Althin graduated from [law school](/source/law_school) with a [master's degree](/source/master's_degree) in [law](/source/law) (jur. kand.) from [Lund University](/source/Lund_University) in 1968 and joined the [Swedish Bar Association](/source/Swedish_Bar_Association) in 1974. As a lawyer practicing [criminal law](/source/criminal_law) he has defended notable clients like [Tommy Alexandersson](/source/Tommy_Alexandersson), [Tony Olsson](/source/Tony_Olsson_(criminal)), [Mehdi Ghezali](/source/Mehdi_Ghezali), [Joy Rahman](/source/Joy_Rahman) and [Mijailo Mijailović](/source/Mijailo_Mijailovi%C4%87). Most recently, he defended [Peter Sunde](/source/Peter_Sunde) at the [Pirate Bay trial](/source/Pirate_Bay_trial).

Since 2002, Althin is a member of the Swedish parliament where he is a substitute in the justice committee and constitutional committee. Althin is also a member of the executive board of the Christian Democrat Party. He is also often seen in the media, not only regarding cases where he is hired as a defense attorney but also as a commentator. Despite his position as an [MP](/source/Member_of_Parliament) he has continued his law practice, the [Anna Lindh](/source/Anna_Lindh)-case has been his most time-consuming so far.
