**James Peter Patterson** (born January 4, 1957) is a former [World Cup](/source/FIS_Alpine_Ski_World_Cup) [alpine ski racer](/source/Alpine_skiing) for the [United States](/source/United_States_Ski_Team), from [Sun Valley, Idaho](/source/Sun_Valley,_Idaho).[1] At the [Winter Olympics](/source/Alpine_skiing_at_the_Winter_Olympics), he finished thirteenth in the [downhill](/source/Downhill_(ski_competition)) in [1976](/source/Alpine_skiing_at_the_1976_Winter_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_downhill) and fifth in [1980](/source/Alpine_skiing_at_the_1980_Winter_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_downhill). At the time, he tied for the best finish by an American male in an Olympic downhill (with [Bill Beck](/source/William_Beck_(alpine_skier)) in [1952](/source/Alpine_skiing_at_the_1952_Winter_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_downhill)).[1][2]

Two years earlier at the [1978 World Championships](/source/FIS_Alpine_World_Ski_Championships_1978) at [Garmisch-Partenkirchen](/source/Garmisch-Partenkirchen), [West Germany](/source/West_Germany), Patterson was the bronze medalist in the [combined](/source/FIS_Alpine_World_Ski_Championships_1978#Combined) event.[3][4] The [combined](/source/Alpine_skiing_combined) was then a "paper race", using the results of the downhill, giant slalom, and slalom.
