Military unit

The **Peruvian Guard Legion** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Legión Peruana de la Guardia*) is a traditional military unit of [Peru](/source/Peru). It has participated in several conflicts since the country's independence and the unit's formation by [José de San Martín](/source/Jos%C3%A9_de_San_Mart%C3%ADn) in 1821.[1] Its headquarters are located in the [Real Felipe Fortress](/source/Real_Felipe_Fortress) located in [Callao](/source/Callao).

## History

The unit was established by [José de San Martín](/source/Jos%C3%A9_de_San_Mart%C3%ADn) with a decree published on August 18, 1821.[2] It was the first military unit of the new self-proclaimed [Peruvian state](/source/Protectorate_of_Peru), and thus, the origin of the [Peruvian Army](/source/Peruvian_Army).[1] Its purpose was to uphold the independence proclaimed against the [Viceroyalty of Peru](/source/Viceroyalty_of_Peru), with its first commander being [José Bernardo de Tagle](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Bernardo_de_Tagle_y_Portocarrero%2C_Marquis_of_Torre_Tagle). Englishman [Guillermo Miller](/source/Guillermo_Miller) was responsible for organizing the unit and also served as a commander.

The unit participated in the [Peruvian War of Independence](/source/Peruvian_War_of_Independence), including the decisive battles of [Junín](/source/Battle_of_Jun%C3%ADn) and [Ayacucho](/source/Battle_of_Ayacucho), where it fought under the [United Liberating Army of Peru](/source/United_Liberating_Army_of_Peru). Later on it would see action in the [War of the Confederation](/source/War_of_the_Confederation), the [Chincha Islands War](/source/Chincha_Islands_War) and the [Ecuadorian–Peruvian War](/source/Ecuadorian%E2%80%93Peruvian_War).[3][4] The unit is currently part of the [2nd Army Division](/source/2nd_Army_Division_(Peru)) of the [Peruvian Army](/source/Peruvian_Army).[5]
