The '''perimetrium''' (or '''serous coat of uterus''') is the outer [serosa](/source/serosa)l layer of the [uterus](/source/uterus), derived from the [peritoneum](/source/peritoneum) overlying the [uterine fundus](/source/uterine_fundus), and can be considered a [visceral peritoneum](/source/visceral_peritoneum). It consists of a superficial layer of [mesothelium](/source/mesothelium), and a thin layer of [loose connective tissue](/source/loose_connective_tissue) beneath it.

Anteriorly, the perimetrium covers the fundus and upper body of the uterus until it meets the superoposterior surface of the adjacent [urinary bladder](/source/urinary_bladder), resulting in a concave fold of peritoneum called the ''[vesicouterine pouch](/source/vesicouterine_pouch)''. Posteriorly, the perimetrium covers the entire surface of the uterus deep down to the [cervix](/source/cervix), where it then folds back onto the adjacent [rectum](/source/rectum) to form the ''[rectouterine pouch](/source/rectouterine_pouch)'', the lowest gutter of the [peritoneal cavity](/source/peritoneal_cavity). Laterally, the perimetrium blends into the [serosa](/source/serosa)e of the [broad ligament](/source/broad_ligament)s.<ref>Manual of Obstetrics. (3rd ed.).
