**Miguel Ángel 'Periko' Alonso Oyarbide** (born 1 February 1953) is a Spanish former [football](/source/Association_football) [midfielder](/source/Midfielder). He was also a [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)).

He played mainly for [Real Sociedad](/source/Real_Sociedad) (five years) and [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) (three) in his professional career, achieving [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) totals of 273 matches and 42 goals in ten seasons.[2]

A [Spanish international](/source/Spain_national_football_team) for two years, Alonso represented the country at the [1982 World Cup](/source/1982_FIFA_World_Cup).

## Playing career

Born in [Tolosa](/source/Tolosa,_Spain), [Gipuzkoa](/source/Gipuzkoa), Alonso played professionally for [Real Sociedad](/source/Real_Sociedad), [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona) and [Sabadell](/source/CE_Sabadell_FC). With the first, he was instrumental in back-to-back [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) conquests (averaging 32 games and five goals in those seasons and not starting only once), and won 19 of his 20 [caps](/source/Cap_(sport)) for [Spain](/source/Spain_national_football_team) in the process; his debut came on 24 September 1980 in a [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game) with [Hungary](/source/Hungary_national_football_team) (2–2), in [Budapest](/source/Budapest).[3]

In [1982–83](/source/1982%E2%80%9383_La_Liga), having retired from the national team following the unsuccessful [home World Cup campaign](/source/1982_FIFA_World_Cup), Alonso joined Barcelona,[4] being used relatively little during most of his spell. He won the league in his [final year](/source/1984%E2%80%9385_La_Liga), but only appeared twice, eventually retiring in 1988 with *Barça* neighbours Sabadell, helping the club achieve promotion from [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) in his [first season](/source/1985%E2%80%9386_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) and scoring 12 goals – a career-best – in [his second](/source/1986%E2%80%9387_La_Liga), as the modest [Catalans](/source/Catalonia) ranked 17th after the first 34 matches, but eventually managed to avoid a drop after finishing third in their [relegation](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) group in the second stage.[5]

## Coaching career

Alonso started working as a manager immediately after retiring, mainly in the [Basque Country](/source/Basque_Country_(autonomous_community)). In 2000, after an unsuccessful spell at [Hércules](/source/H%C3%A9rcules_CF) (second division, [relegation](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n)),[7] he had a chance to coach Real Sociedad but only lasted ten games, retiring from the sport subsequently.[8][9]

## Personal life

Alonso's sons, [Mikel](/source/Mikel_Alonso) and [Xabi](/source/Xabi_Alonso), were also footballers and midfielders. Both followed in their father's footsteps representing Real Sociedad, and the latter also played with great success for [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool_F.C.), [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_CF), [Bayern Munich](/source/FC_Bayern_Munich) and the Spain national team.[10][11]
