# Performance Space

**Performance Space**, later **Performance Space at Carriageworks**, is an arts organisation based in [Sydney](/source/Sydney), Australia, that develops and presents interdisciplinary arts and [experimental theatre](/source/Experimental_theatre).

## History

Performance Space was established in 1983 in a venue in [Cleveland St](/source/Cleveland_Street,_Sydney), [Redfern](/source/Redfern,_New_South_Wales) (known as Cleveland Street Performance Space from 1980 until 1983[1]), with [Christopher Allen](/source/Christopher_Allen_(critic)) as its manager.[2][3] The building was formerly the [State Rail Authority](/source/State_Rail_Authority) Trade Union Dance Hall.[4][5]

In April 1987, the newly-formed performance group [The Sydney Front](/source/The_Sydney_Front) performed *Waltz*, composed by Sarah de Jong, directed by Nigel Kellaway, and featuring [Roz Hervey](/source/Roz_Hervey), at the Performance Space.[6]

In 2007 the Performance Space moved to the [Carriageworks](/source/Carriageworks) contemporary multi-arts centre,[7] when the company became known as Performance Space at Carriageworks.[8]

The original venue became known as 199 Cleveland Street Theatre between 2007 and 2013, and has also been referred to as Giant Dwarf Theatre and Old Performance Space.[1]

## Description

Performance Space develops and presents interdisciplinary arts and experimental theatre.[9]

As of November 2024 the CEO is Vanessa Lloyd and Kate Britton is the [artistic director](/source/Artistic_director).[10]

Performance Space is a member of the advocacy organisation [Contemporary Art Organisations Australia](/source/Contemporary_Art_Organisations_Australia).[11]
