The **Pequest River** is a 35.7-mile-long (57.5 km)[1] [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Delaware River](/source/Delaware_River) in the [Skylands Region](/source/Skylands_Region) in northwestern [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey) in the [United States](/source/United_States).[5]

The Pequest, [Native American](/source/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States) for "open land,"[5] drains an area of 162.62 square miles (421.2 km2) across [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County%2C_New_Jersey) and [Warren](/source/Warren_County%2C_New_Jersey) counties, consisting of ten municipalities.

## Course

The Pequest starts at Stickles Pond, [Newton](/source/Newton%2C_New_Jersey) in [Sussex County](/source/Sussex_County%2C_New_Jersey) and flows southward through [Springdale](/source/Springdale%2C_Sussex_County%2C_New_Jersey) and [Huntsville](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Huntsville,_New_Jersey&action=edit&redlink=1), about 3.5 miles (5.6 km), where it starts to turn southwest. It passes through a tunnel under the [Pequest Fill](/source/Pequest_Fill), built in 1911 by the [Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad](/source/Delaware%2C_Lackawanna_and_Western_Railroad) as part of the mammoth [Lackawanna Cut-Off](/source/Lackawanna_Cut-Off) project.

Flowing through [Tranquility](/source/Tranquility%2C_New_Jersey), it runs along the northwestern side of the [Allamuchy Mountain](/source/Allamuchy_Mountain) ridge near [Allamuchy](/source/Allamuchy_Township%2C_New_Jersey), where it meets [Trout Brook](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Trout_Brook_(New_Jersey)&action=edit&redlink=1).

It now joins [Bear Creek](/source/Bear_Creek_(New_Jersey)) in Bear Swamp and passes through the reclaimed swampy area known as the [Great Meadows](/source/Great_Meadows%2C_New_Jersey), lying between the ridges of [Jenny Jump Mountain](/source/Jenny_Jump_Mountain) and [Cat Swamp Mountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cat_Swamp_Mountain&action=edit&redlink=1). [Shades Of Death Road](/source/Shades_Of_Death_Road) runs along the foot of Jenny Jump Mountain on the north side of the valley here. Some of the land here was drained for cultivation by excavation and clearing of the Pequest and its tributaries. It exits the Great Meadows in a long loop through the gap between Cat Swamp Mountain and [Danville Mountain](/source/Danville_Mountain) and resumes its course along the southeastern side of [Mount Mohepinoke](/source/Mount_Mohepinoke), entering the [Pequest Wildlife Management Area](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pequest_Wildlife_Management_Area&action=edit&redlink=1). [Furnace Brook](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Furnace_Brook&action=edit&redlink=1) empties into it as it descends into a small gorge cut between Mt. Mohepinoke and an outlying spur of the [Scotts Mountain](/source/Scotts_Mountain) massif. It turns west, and [Mountain Lake Brook](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mountain_Lake_Brook&action=edit&redlink=1) enters the stream just above [Buttzville](/source/Buttzville%2C_New_Jersey), where it exists the Pequest WMA. It passes west through [Bridgeville](/source/Bridgeville%2C_New_Jersey), turns slightly towards the north, and meets [Beaver Brook](/source/Beaver_Brook_(New_Jersey)) as it turns southwest again. It tumbles down to [Belvidere](/source/Belvidere%2C_New_Jersey) in a series of falls, where it meets the Delaware River.
