**Pennypack Park** is a [municipal park](/source/Municipal_park), part of the [Philadelphia Parks & Recreation](/source/Philadelphia_Parks_%26_Recreation) system located in [Northeast Philadelphia](/source/Northeast_Philadelphia) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania). Established in 1905 by ordinance of the City of Philadelphia, it includes about 1,600 acres (6 km2) of woodlands, meadows and wetlands. The [Pennypack Creek](/source/Pennypack_Creek) runs through the park from Pine Road to the [Delaware River](/source/Delaware_River). The park has playgrounds, hiking and bike trails, and bridle paths for horseback riding. An adjunct to the park is the Pennypack Environmental Center on Verree Road.

More than 150 species of nesting and migrating birds use the park, including the tiny [ruby-throated hummingbird](/source/Ruby-throated_hummingbird), the [great blue heron](/source/Great_blue_heron), [warblers](/source/Warbler), the [pileated woodpecker](/source/Pileated_woodpecker), several kinds of seabirds, [ducks](/source/Duck), [geese](/source/Geese), [hawks](/source/Hawk), [great horned owls](/source/Great_horned_owl) and the little [screech owl](/source/Screech_owl) to name only a few. Famous for its large, scattered deer herd, the park is home to a large variety of mammals, including several kinds of bat, the [red](/source/Red_fox) and [gray fox](/source/Gray_fox), [rabbits](/source/Rabbit), [chipmunks](/source/Chipmunk), [mice](/source/Mouse), [muskrats](/source/Muskrat), [groundhogs](/source/Groundhog), [raccoons](/source/Raccoon), [skunks](/source/Skunk), [opossum](/source/Opossum) and [weasels](/source/Weasel). The park is home to many reptile species including several kinds of [snakes](/source/Snake), [turtles](/source/Turtle) (including [common snapping turtles](/source/Common_snapping_turtle)), [frogs](/source/Frog), the [common toad](/source/Common_toad) and several kinds of [salamanders](/source/Salamander).

Many historic structures remain intact throughout Pennypack Park. Built in 1697, the [King's Highway Bridge](/source/Frankford_Avenue_Bridge) at [Frankford Avenue](/source/U.S._Route_13) is the oldest stone bridge still in use in the [United States](/source/United_States). [Pennepack Baptist Church](/source/Pennepack_Baptist_Church), another of the park's historic sites, was chartered in 1688.[1] During the [American Revolutionary War](/source/American_Revolutionary_War) The Verree House on Verree Road was the site of a raid by [British](/source/Kingdom_of_Great_Britain) troops. Pennypack also contains some more modern landmarks, including the [Ed Kelly Amphitheater](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ed_Kelly_Amphitheater&action=edit&redlink=1) .The trained eye can rediscover abandoned railroad grades, remnants of early mills, mill races and other reminders that generations of mankind have gathered in the "Green Heart" of Northeast Philadelphia.
