**Penelope Jane Brothers** is a New Zealand chemistry academic. She is currently Director of the Research School of Chemistry at the [Australian National University](/source/Australian_National_University), specializing in [inorganic chemistry](/source/Inorganic_chemistry).[2]

## Academic career

Brothers completed a [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) and [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science) at the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland), in 1978 and then 1979. Later that year, she traveled to [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) after receiving a [Fulbright Program](/source/Fulbright_Program) fellowship.[1] There, she studied under [James P. Collman](/source/James_P._Collman) and completed a 1985 [PhD](/source/PhD) titled *'The organometallic chemistry of ruthenium and osmium porphyrin complexes.'*[3] The next year, Brothers returned to the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland) as a [postdoctoral researcher](/source/Postdoctoral_researcher), rising to full professor in 2009.[2][3] During her early career, she played a large role in establishing her field of [porphyrin](/source/Porphyrin) chemistry; as of 2018, she is the only researcher who has studied the role of [boron](/source/Boron) in porphyrins or [corroles](/source/Corrole).[3]

In 2007, Brothers was named as a [Fulbright](/source/Fulbright_Program) Senior Scholar.[4] She is also on the editorial board of the journal *[Chemical Communications](/source/Chemical_Communications)* as associate editor.[3]

Professor Brothers left the [University of Auckland](/source/University_of_Auckland) to join [Australian National University](/source/Australian_National_University) in 2019, where she is currently Director of the Research School of Chemistry.[5]
