In [IUPAC nomenclature](/source/IUPAC_nomenclature_of_chemistry) of [chemistry](/source/chemistry), a '''pendant group''' (sometimes spelled '''pendent''') or '''side group''' is a group of [atom](/source/atom)s attached to a [backbone chain](/source/backbone_chain) of a long [molecule](/source/molecule), usually a [polymer](/source/polymer). Pendant groups are different from [pendant chains](/source/side_chain), as they are neither [oligomer](/source/oligomer)ic nor polymeric.<ref>{{GoldBookRef|title=pendant group (side group)|file=P04472}}</ref>

For example, the [phenyl group](/source/phenyl_group)s are the pendant groups on a [polystyrene](/source/polystyrene) chain.

Large, bulky pendant groups such as [adamantyl](/source/adamantyl) usually raise the [glass transition temperature](/source/glass_transition_temperature) ({{mvar|T{{sub|g}}}}) of a polymer by preventing the chains from sliding past each other easily. Short alkyl pendant groups may lower the {{mvar|T{{sub|g}}}} by a lubricant effect.
