== Etymology ==
''Peltophorum'' literally means "shield-bearing": from Greek {{transliteration|grc|pelt(ē)}} ({{wikt-lang|grc|πέλτη}}, "[''peltē'' shield](/source/pelt%C4%93)"), with the interfix {{wikt-lang|la|-o-}}, ''-phor(os)'' ("bearing") and [Neo-Latin](/source/Neo-Latin) suffix {{wikt-lang|la|-um}}.

It is a reference to the [peltate](/source/peltate) (shield-like) form of the plant's [stigma](/source/stigma_(botany)).<ref>{{cite book |title=Some beautiful Indian Trees |last=Blatter |first=Ethelbert |author2=Millard, Walter Samuel |year=1977 |publisher=Bombay natural History Society |location=Mumbai |edition=2|orig-year=1937|pages=109–111 | quote = The generic name ''Peltophorum'' means "shield-bearing" (from the ancient Greek word {{lang|grc|πέλτη}} [{{transliteration|grc|pĕltē}}] "a small light shield") and refers to the peltate [stigma](/source/stigma_(botany)).}}</ref>
