'''Pelagosite''' is a form of [pisolitic](/source/pisolitic) [aragonite](/source/aragonite) ([Ca](/source/calcium)[C](/source/carbon)[O](/source/oxygen)3) whose [type locality](/source/Type_locality_(geology)) is the [Croatia](/source/Croatia)n island group of [Palagruža](/source/Palagru%C5%BEa) (Italian ''Pelagosa'', whence the name) in the middle of the [Adriatic](/source/Adriatic). It was identified by R. Moser in ''Mineralogische und petrographische Mitteilungen'', new series (Vienna) '''1''' (1878), 174. It has a higher content of [magnesium carbonate](/source/magnesium_carbonate), [strontium carbonate](/source/strontium_carbonate), [calcium sulfate](/source/calcium_sulfate) ([gypsum](/source/gypsum)) and [silicon dioxide](/source/silicon_dioxide)([silica](/source/silica)) than is found in typical limy [sediment](/source/sediment)s elsewhere. It occurs as a superficial [calcareous](/source/calcareous) crust no more than a few millimetres thick, which is generally white, grey, or brownish with a pearly [lustre](/source/Lustre_(mineralogy)). It was believed to be formed in the [intertidal zone](/source/intertidal_zone) by saltwater spray and [evaporation](/source/evaporation), but an [alga](/source/alga)l contribution has recently been suggested (Montanari and others (2007)), following an overlooked earlier proposal by E. Onorato in 1926.
