==Overview==
It is situated {{convert|13|km|mi|0}} northeast of [Cottbus](/source/Cottbus). Surrounded by freshwater lakes, it is well known for its fishing industry. The town was at one time on the border between the states of Brandenburg and [Saxony](/source/Saxony), and was formerly protected by strong artillery fortifications built in brick, dating from the 16th century. Only small parts of these remain.

From 1661 to 1678, Peitz was the place of imprisonment of [Hieronymus Roth](/source/Hieronymus_Roth), leader of the opposition of the city of [Königsberg](/source/Kaliningrad) against [Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg](/source/Frederick_William%2C_the_Great_Elector), and opponent of the secession of the city from the Kingdom of Poland.<ref>{{cite book|last=Clark|first=Christopher|title=Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia, 1600−1947|year=2006|publisher=Harvard University Press|location=Cambridge, Massachusetts|page=60}}</ref>

From 1815 to 1947, Peitz was part of the [Prussian](/source/Prussia) [Province of Brandenburg](/source/Province_of_Brandenburg).

After [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Peitz was incorporated into the State of [Brandenburg](/source/Brandenburg) from 1947 to 1952 and the [Bezirk Cottbus](/source/Bezirk_Cottbus) of [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) from 1952 to 1990. Since 1990, Peitz has been part of Brandenburg.
