The '''Pechell''', later '''Brooke-Pechell''', later '''Pechell baronetcy''', of [Paglesham](/source/Paglesham) in the County of [Essex](/source/Essex), was a title in the [Baronetage of Great Britain](/source/Baronetage_of_Great_Britain),  was created on 1 March 1797 for the army officer [Paul Pechell](/source/Paul_Pechell) (1724–1800), initially with the [1st Royal Dragoons](/source/1st_The_Royal_Dragoons). The 2nd Baronet was also an army officer; the 3rd and 4th Baronets rose to [flag rank](/source/Flag_Officer) in the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy). The 7th Baronet was a [Surgeon](/source/Surgeon) and a [Lieutenant-Colonel](/source/Lieutenant_colonel_(United_Kingdom)) in the [Royal Army Medical Corps](/source/Royal_Army_Medical_Corps), serving during the [Third Anglo-Burmese War](/source/Third_Anglo-Burmese_War) and later at the [Royal Hospital, Chelsea](/source/Royal_Hospital_Chelsea) during World War I.<ref name="WW7">{{Who's Who|title=Pechell, Sir (Augustus) Alexander|id=U206682|access-date=1 March 2023}}</ref> The 8th Baronet served with the [Essex Regiment](/source/Essex_Regiment) during World War I, and was awarded the [Military Cross](/source/Military_Cross) for gallantry in the Field.<ref name="WW8">{{Who's Who|title=Pechell, Lt-Col Sir Paul|id=U158368|access-date=1 March 2023}}</ref> The 8th and 9th Baronets used the surname Pechell only. ==Background==
The Pechells (originally de Pechels) were a noble [Huguenot](/source/Huguenots) family, and in the late 17th century after severe persecution Samuel Pechell (b.1644) and his family fled for [Geneva](/source/Geneva). After Samuel’s later escape from French captivity in the [Caribbean](/source/Caribbean) that was aided by the [British](/source/British_Empire), he joined his family at Owenstown in [County Kildare](/source/County_Kildare); as a cavalry officer he received a pension from [King William III](/source/William_III_of_England). The family later moved to [England](/source/England) and on 21 November 1705, a petition was made to Queen Anne’s parliament for the naturalisation of Samuel's son, Jacob Pechell (for de Péchels), which was granted. His son Paul was the 1st Baronet.<ref name="Burke"/>

* George Douglas Brooke-Pechell, son of the 7th Baronet, was killed on 21 December 1916 while flying.<ref name="Burke"/> He was at Filton Aerodrome in Gloucestershire,  attached to 66 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps as a Lieutenant.
