**Pearly Tan Koong Le**[a] [ASK](/source/Orders%2C_decorations%2C_and_medals_of_Kedah) (born 14 March 2000) is a Malaysian [badminton](/source/Badminton) player. She and her partner [Thinaah Muralitharan](/source/Thinaah_Muralitharan) won the [women's doubles](/source/2025_BWF_World_Championships_%E2%80%93_Women's_doubles) silver medals at the [2025 World Championships](/source/2025_BWF_World_Championships) and reached the [women's doubles](/source/Badminton_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_doubles) semi-finals at the [2024 Summer Olympics](/source/2024_Summer_Olympics). They also won gold medals in both the [women's doubles](/source/Badminton_at_the_2022_Commonwealth_Games_%E2%80%93_Women's_doubles) and the [mixed team](/source/Badminton_at_the_2022_Commonwealth_Games_%E2%80%93_Mixed_team) events at the [2022 Commonwealth Games](/source/2022_Commonwealth_Games) as well as in the [women's doubles](/source/Badminton_at_the_2025_SEA_Games_%E2%80%93_Individual_event#Women's_doubles) event at the [2025 SEA Games](/source/2025_SEA_Games). They became the first ever Malaysian World Championship medalists and Olympic semi-finalists in the women's doubles event. Their results at the World Championships and the Olympic Games made them the most successful Malaysian badminton women's doubles pair in the history.[1]

## Career

### 2018

In July, Tan and [Toh Ee Wei](/source/Toh_Ee_Wei) became silver medalists in the girls' doubles events at the [Badminton Asia Junior Championships](/source/2018_Badminton_Asia_Junior_Championships).

Following a win at the Malaysia International Junior Open, Tan and Toh continued their great form at the [World Junior Championships](/source/2018_BWF_World_Junior_Championships) and clinched silver. Tan also won all of her matches in the Mixed Team event both with Toh and as a scratch pairing with [Goh Jin Wei](/source/Goh_Jin_Wei).[2]

### 2019

After brief partnerships with [Teoh Mei Xing](/source/Teoh_Mei_Xing) and [Lim Chiew Sin](/source/Lim_Chiew_Sien), Tan went on to win her maiden senior title at the [2019 Malaysia International Series](/source/Malaysia_International) with [Thinaah Muralitharan](/source/Thinaah_Muralitharan).

### 2021

Tan and Muralitharan clinched their first BWF World Tour title at the [Swiss Open](/source/2021_Swiss_Open_(badminton)), defeating teammates and second seeds [Chow Mei Kuan](/source/Chow_Mei_Kuan) and [Lee Meng Yean](/source/Lee_Meng_Yean) in the semi-finals, and third seeds [Gabriela Stoeva](/source/Gabriela_Stoeva) and [Stefani Stoeva](/source/Stefani_Stoeva) in the finals as an unseeded pair.[3]

### 2022

In August, Tan and Muralitharan became gold medalists in the women's doubles and mixed team event at the [2022 Commonwealth Games](/source/Badminton_at_the_2022_Commonwealth_Games).[4][5]

In October, Tan and Muralitharan claimed the [French Open](/source/2022_French_Open_(badminton)) title, becoming the first ever Malaysian women's doubles pair to achieve this feat.[6]

### 2023

In April, Tan set a new world record for the fastest women's badminton smash at 438 kilometers per hour at the Yonex Tokyo Factory. She is the first badminton player to hold that world record.[7]

In May, Tan and Muralitharan won all of their games at the [Sudirman Cup](/source/2023_Sudirman_Cup) and managed a second place finish at the [Malaysia Masters](/source/2023_Malaysia_Masters), losing to [Baek Ha-na](/source/Baek_Ha-na) and [Lee So-hee](/source/Lee_So-hee) in the finals.

At the [World Championships](/source/2023_BWF_World_Championships), Tan and Muralitharan defeated fourth seeds and two-time former champions [Mayu Matsumoto](/source/Mayu_Matsumoto) and [Wakana Nagahara](/source/Wakana_Nagahara) in the third round, but fell to sixth seeds [Zhang Shuxian](/source/Zhang_Shuxian) and [Zheng Yu](/source/Zheng_Yu) in the quarter finals in a tightly contested three game match.

In September, they finished second at the [Hong Kong Open](/source/2023_Hong_Kong_Open_(badminton)), losing to [Apriyani Rahayu](/source/Apriyani_Rahayu) and [Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti](/source/Siti_Fadia_Silva_Ramadhanti) in the finals.

### 2024

Tan and Muralitharan became the first ever Malaysian women's doubles pair to advance to the semi-finals of an Olympic Games at the [2024 Paris Olympics](/source/Badminton_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_doubles). Ranked 13th in the world at the time, they were drawn into Group A alongside [Chen Qingchen](/source/Chen_Qingchen) and [Jia Yifan](/source/Jia_Yifan) from China, [Mayu Matsumoto](/source/Mayu_Matsumoto) and [Wakana Nagahara](/source/Wakana_Nagahara) from Japan, and [Apriyani Rahayu](/source/Apriyani_Rahayu) and [Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti](/source/Siti_Fadia_Silva_Ramadhanti) from Indonesia, ranked 1st, 6th, and 9th in the world respectively.[8] Having successfully advanced from the group stage with a 2–1 record, they defeated then ranked 7th in the world [Kim So-yeong](/source/Kim_So-yeong) and [Kong Hee-yong](/source/Kong_Hee-yong) from Korea in the quarter-finals in straight sets, before falling to Chen and Jia in the semi-finals and Japan's [Nami Matsuyama](/source/Nami_Matsuyama) and [Chiharu Shida](/source/Chiharu_Shida) in the bronze medal match.

In September, they finished second at the [Korea Open](/source/2024_Korea_Open_(badminton)), losing to [Jeong Na-eun](/source/Jeong_Na-eun) and [Kim Hye-jeong](/source/Kim_Hye-jeong) in the finals. They won their first Super 500 level title at the [Hong Kong Open](/source/2024_Hong_Kong_Open_(badminton)), defeating [Liu Shengshu](/source/Liu_Shengshu) and [Tan Ning](/source/Tan_Ning_(badminton)) in the finals in straight sets.

In October, they finished second at the [Arctic Open](/source/2024_Arctic_Open), losing to Liu and Tan in the finals.

### 2025

In 2025, Tan competed in the [SEA Games](/source/Badminton_at_the_2025_SEA_Games) in Thailand. She managed to contribute a gold medal in the women's doubles,[9] and a bronze in the team event.[10]

## Personal life

Tan was born in [Alor Setar](/source/Alor_Setar), Kedah to Tan Chai Ling and badminton coach Tan Seng Hoe.[11] Her father runs the Alor Setar Racquet Club (ASRC), which is also the childhood club of national shuttlers [Lee Zii Jia](/source/Lee_Zii_Jia) and [Jacky Kok](/source/Kok_Jing_Hong).[12]
