The '''Peace Crane Project''' was founded in 2013 by [Sue DiCicco](/source/Sue_DiCicco),<ref>{{cite web|url= https://www.csmonitor.com/World/Making-a-difference/2014/0502/Sue-DiCicco-helps-children-make-and-share-peace-cranes |title=Sue DiCicco helps children make and share peace cranes|date=2 May 2014|publisher=|via=Christian Science Monitor}}</ref> in order to promote world peace and raise awareness of the [International Day of Peace](/source/International_Day_of_Peace) (21 September).

A "peace crane" is an [origami crane](/source/Orizuru) used as [peace symbol](/source/peace_symbol), by reference to the story of [Sadako Sasaki](/source/Sadako_Sasaki) (1943–1955), a Japanese victim of the long-term effects of the [nuclear bombing of Hiroshima](/source/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki) in 1945. Sasaki was one of the most widely known ''[hibakusha](/source/hibakusha)'' (Japanese for "bomb-affected person"), said to have folded [one thousand origami cranes](/source/one_thousand_origami_cranes) before her death.

The Peace Crane Project participated in the 20th Annual Sadako Peace Day, hosted by the [Nuclear Age Peace Foundation](/source/Nuclear_Age_Peace_Foundation) in Montecito (2014).<ref>{{cite web|url= http://www.independent.com/releases/2014/jul/21/sadako-peace-day/ |title=Sadako Peace Day|website=www.independent.com}}</ref>

Participants in the Peace Crane Project are asked to fold an origami crane and then sign up on the website to exchange their crane with someone in a different city, state, country or continent. They are encouraged to take a photo of their crane after placing it in their community, and to upload the photo online.<ref>{{cite web|author=Liza Frenette |url=http://blogs.nysut.org/blog/2013/09/20/paper-cranes-migrate-toward-peace/ |title=Paper cranes migrate toward peace |publisher=blogs.nysut.org |date=2013-09-20 |accessdate=2014-02-19}}</ref>
In [Bangalore](/source/Bangalore), India, over sixty schools took part in the peace crane exchange in 2013.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.deccanherald.com/content/357312/sharing-art-pieces-online-peace.html |title=Sharing art pieces online for peace |publisher=Deccanherald.com |date=2013-09-15 |accessdate=2014-02-19}}</ref>
