Travers was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) into the [South Lancashire Regiment](/source/South_Lancashire_Regiment) in 1947.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38136|supp=y|page=5696|date=28 November 1947}}</ref>

In 1978 he was selected to be [Chief of Staff](/source/Chief_of_Staff) at the Logistics Executive<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=47508|supp=y|page=4410|date=10 April 1978}}</ref> before moving on, in 1979, to be Vice-Quartermaster-General.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=47983|supp=y|page=13227|date=22 October 1979}}</ref> In 1981 he was appointed [General Officer Commanding](/source/General_Officer_Commanding) [South East District](/source/South-Eastern_District_(British_Army))<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=48511|supp=y|page=1564|date=2 February 1981}}</ref> and in 1982 he became [Quartermaster-General to the Forces](/source/Quartermaster-General_to_the_Forces);<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=48928|supp=y|page=4007|date=22 March 1982}}</ref> he died in office in 1983.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=49532|supp=y|page=14706|date=7 November 1983}}</ref> He is buried in [Aldershot Military Cemetery](/source/Aldershot_Military_Cemetery).<ref>Photograph of grave shown in this article</ref>
