Paul Slack at Linacre College

**Paul Alexander Slack** [FBA](/source/Fellow_of_the_British_Academy) [FRHistS](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Historical_Society) (born 23 January 1943) is a British historian. He is a former principal of [Linacre College, Oxford](/source/Linacre_College%2C_Oxford), [pro-vice-chancellor](/source/Pro-vice-chancellor) of the [University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford), and professor of early modern social history in the [University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford).

Slack was educated at [Bradford Grammar School](/source/Bradford_Grammar_School), the [University of Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford) ([BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts), [DPhil](/source/DPhil)). He was a [fellow](/source/Fellow#Oxford,_Cambridge_and_Dublin) of [Exeter College, Oxford](/source/Exeter_College%2C_Oxford), from 1973 until 1996. He served as [junior proctor](/source/Proctor#Oxford_University) during the academic year 1986–87 and chairman of the General Board 1995–96.

On 1 October 1996, he took office as principal of [Linacre College](/source/Linacre_College%2C_Oxford). He retired in September 2010. He was appointed [pro-vice-chancellor](/source/Pro-vice-chancellor) in 1997, becoming in 2000 pro-vice-chancellor (academic services and university collections).

In 1999 he was appointed professor of early modern social history. He is also a member of the Environmental Change Institute advisory board and a former chairman of the curators of the [University Libraries](/source/Bodleian_Library).

Slack was elected a [Fellow of the British Academy](/source/British_Academy) in 1990.
