He served as the head football coach at [Iowa Central Community College](/source/Iowa_Central_Community_College) in [Fort Dodge, Iowa](/source/Fort_Dodge%2C_Iowa) from 1967 to 1989, compiling a 155–62–4 in 23 seasons. Shupe attended [Chariton High School](/source/Chariton_High_School) in [Chariton, Iowa](/source/Chariton%2C_Iowa) before going to Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts—now known as [Iowa State University](/source/Iowa_State_University). After playing as a [halfback](/source/Halfback_(American_football)) for the [Iowa State Cyclones football](/source/Iowa_State_Cyclones_football) team in 1951 and 1952, he served in the [United States Army Signal Corps](/source/United_States_Army_Signal_Corps).
