Pechell entered the army as [cornet](/source/cornet)-en-seconde in the [Royal Regiment of Dragoons](/source/1st_The_Royal_Dragoons) in 1744, and was promoted [captain](/source/Captain_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) in [Fleming's Regiment of Foot](/source/36th_(Herefordshire)_Regiment_of_Foot) in 1746.<ref name=":0" /> Wounded at [Laffeld](/source/Battle_of_Lauffeld) in 1747 during the [War of the Austrian Succession](/source/War_of_the_Austrian_Succession), he received 'the greatest commendation' from the [Duke of Cumberland](/source/Prince_William%2C_Duke_of_Cumberland).

In 1751, Pechell was gazetted captain in the [3rd Dragoon Guards](/source/3rd_Dragoon_Guards), and in the following spring his regiment escorted [George II](/source/George_II_of_Great_Britain) to [Harwich](/source/Harwich) to embark for [Hanover](/source/Hannover).  For the next three years the regiment was on coast duty suppressing smuggling in [Suffolk](/source/Suffolk), [Essex](/source/Essex), and [Devon](/source/Devon) and patrolling against highway robbers. Pechell was gazetted [guidon](/source/guidon_(Commonwealth)) in the [Second Troop of Horse Grenadier Guards](/source/Life_Guards_(British_Army)) in 1754, and was promoted to captain in 1755, [major](/source/Major_(rank)) in 1759, and [lieutenant-colonel](/source/lieutenant-colonel) in 1762. He retired from the [army](/source/British_army) in 1768, receiving a lump sum for his commission.
