**Paul Lemerle** (French pronunciation: [\[pol ləmɛʁl\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French); 22 April 1903 – 17 July 1989) was a [French](/source/French_people) [Byzantinist](/source/Byzantinist), born in [Paris](/source/Paris).

## Biography

Lemerle taught at the *[École française d'Athènes](/source/%C3%89cole_fran%C3%A7aise_d'Ath%C3%A8nes)* (1931–1941), at the *Faculté des Lettres* of the [University of Burgundy](/source/University_of_Burgundy) at [Dijon](/source/Dijon) (1942–1947), at the *[École Pratique des Hautes Études](/source/%C3%89cole_Pratique_des_Hautes_%C3%89tudes)* (1947–1968), at the [Sorbonne](/source/University_of_Paris) (1958–1967) and at the *[Collège de France](/source/Coll%C3%A8ge_de_France)* (1967–1973). He completed his doctoral dissertation in 1945, on the city of [Philippi](/source/Philippi) and eastern [Macedonia](/source/Macedonia_(region)) during the Byzantine period.

He was the founding president of the [International Association of Byzantine Studies](/source/International_Association_of_Byzantine_Studies) (AIEB).[1]

He died in Paris.[2]
