# Paul Dennett

**Paul Dennett** is a British politician serving as [Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester](/source/Deputy_Mayor_of_Greater_Manchester) since 2021. A member of the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)), he has served as [Mayor of Salford](/source/Mayor_of_Salford) since 2016.

## Early life

Dennett was born in [Warrington](/source/Warrington) and grew up [working class](/source/Working_class). He is openly gay.[1][2] Dennett's father worked for a power station and was an active [trade unionist](/source/Trade_union) and his mother was a housewife and house cleaner.[3][1] His parents would later run The Engine Pub in [Prescot, Merseyside](/source/Prescot).[1] He attended Park Road Primary School and [Great Sankey High School](/source/Great_Sankey_High_School), before working in customer services at a [BT](/source/BT_Group) call centre.[4]

He received a BA in International Business from the [University of Ulster](/source/Ulster_University), an MSc in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations from the [Manchester Business School](/source/Alliance_Manchester_Business_School), and an [MRES](/source/Master_of_Research) in Social Sciences from [Manchester Metropolitan University](/source/Manchester_Metropolitan_University).[1][4][5] While at university, Dennett worked as an HR adviser and as a lecturer at [Manchester Metropolitan University Business School](/source/Manchester_Metropolitan_University_Business_School).[1][5]

## Career

Dennett joined the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) in 2007.[1] He was elected the Mayor of Salford on 5 May 2016,[6] succeeding [Ian Stewart](/source/Ian_Stewart_(Labour_politician)) also of the Labour Party, and was re-elected in 2021.

As the Mayor of Salford he is also a member of the [Greater Manchester Combined Authority](/source/Greater_Manchester_Combined_Authority), is the GMCA's portfolio lead for Healthy Lives and Homelessness, and, since December 2021, is the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester.[7]

Dennett was formerly a local councillor for the [Langworthy ward](/source/Langworthy_(ward)) in Salford, and is a member of the [Unite](/source/Unite_the_Union) and [UCU](/source/Universities_and_Colleges_Union) trade unions.
