**Paul Dunford** (14 January 1949 – 9 June 2002), professionally billed as **Paul Chubb**, was an [Australian](/source/Australians) film, television and stage actor and scriptwriter primarily in genres of comedy and drama.

## Early life

He was born in [Arncliffe](/source/Arncliffe%2C_New_South_Wales), a suburb of Sydney,[2] and had two brothers Greg (Timothy Bean) and Fred (Fred Dunford) .[3]

## Career

Chubb began his career as an 'everyman' character actor by studying under [Hayes Gordon](/source/Hayes_Gordon) at Sydney's [Ensemble Theatre](/source/Ensemble_Theatre), and began to appear in television commercials, soap operas including *[Number 96](/source/Number_96_(TV_series))*, and television dramas including *[Silent Number](/source/Silent_Number_(TV_series))*. He acted on stage alongside [Judy Davis](/source/Judy_Davis) in [Louis Nowra's](/source/Louis_Nowra) *Inside the Island*. He wrote, directed and acted in pub plays and pantomimes before segueing to feature film work such as *[Stan and George's New Life](/source/Stan_and_George's_New_Life)* (1990) alongside [Julie Forsyth](/source/Julie_Forsyth), which "remains a defining portrayal in a body of work" that includes *[Così](/source/Cos%C3%AC_(film))* (1996), *[Bliss](/source/Bliss_(1985_film))* (1985) and *[Road to Nhill](/source/Road_to_Nhill)* (1997), encompassing a total of 22 feature films.[4] He also starred as the titular character Dirk Trent in murder-mystery comedy film *[The Roly Poly Man](/source/The_Roly_Poly_Man)* (1994).

He had recurring roles in numerous television series including sitcom *[Daily at Dawn](/source/Daily_at_Dawn)* (1981) as Russell Ducke, comedy series *[Watch This Space](/source/Watch_This_Space)* (1982) as Rufus the alien, children's drama *[Betty's Bunch](/source/Betty's_Bunch)* (1990) as Arthur Quinter 'The Con' and soap opera *[Home and Away](/source/Home_and_Away)* (1999–2000) as Jack Brown. He hosted improvisational comedy series *[Theatre Sports](/source/Theatre_Sports_(TV_series))* on the ABC in 1988. He also appeared in long-running children's series *[Mr. Squiggle](/source/Mr._Squiggle)* as the characters of Big Bob and Mr Wallop from 1986 to 1991.

Additionally, Chubb has appeared in several miniseries including *[The Dismissal](/source/The_Dismissal_(miniseries))* (1983), *[Bodyline](/source/Bodyline_(miniseries))* (1984), *[Dancing Daze](/source/Dancing_Daze)* (1986), *[Spit MacPhee](/source/Spit_MacPhee)* (1988), *[The Paper Man](/source/The_Paper_Man_(miniseries))* (1990) and *[The Farm](/source/The_Farm_(TV_mini-series))* (2001).

Chubb guest starred as State [Member of Parliament](/source/Members_of_Parliament), Patrick Rafferty (Michael Rafferty's brother), in legal series *[Rafferty's Rules](/source/Rafferty's_Rules)*. Chubb's last writing project was to script dialogue with Linda Nagle for [The Australian Ballet](/source/The_Australian_Ballet) and [Sydney Dance Company](/source/Sydney_Dance_Company) stage production of *[Tivoli](/source/Tivoli_(musical))*.[5]

## Personal life and death

Chubb's real name was Paul Dunford – he took the name 'Chubb' because it accurately described his physique.[6]

Chubb died on 9 June 2002, age 53, in [Newcastle, New South Wales](/source/Newcastle%2C_New_South_Wales) due to post operative [cardiomyopathy](/source/Cardiomyopathy) complications. He was survived by one of his brothers.[7]
