**Paul Kwan Chien** (, born 1 January 1947) is a Hong Kong-American biologist known for his research on the [physiology](/source/Physiology) and [ecology](/source/Ecology) of [intertidal](/source/Intertidal_zone) organisms and his support for [intelligent design](/source/Intelligent_design).[1][2]

## Biography

Chien was born on 1 January 1947 in Hong Kong and earned bachelor's degrees in Biology and Chemistry from [Chung Chi College](/source/Chung_Chi_College) of the [Chinese University of Hong Kong](/source/Chinese_University_of_Hong_Kong) in 1966 and his Ph.D. in 1971 from the [University of California at Irvine](/source/University_of_California_at_Irvine) in the laboratory of marine invertebrate physiologist [Grover C. Stephens](/source/Grover_C._Stephens).[1] After a brief postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of [Wheeler J. North](/source/Wheeler_J._North) at the [Kerckhoff marine laboratory](/source/Kerckhoff_marine_laboratory) of the [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology) in Corona del Mar, California, he joined the faculty of the [University of San Francisco](/source/University_of_San_Francisco) in 1973. His research has involved the transport of [amino acids](/source/Amino_acids) and [metal](/source/Metal) [ions](/source/Ions) across [cell membranes](/source/Cell_membranes) as well as the [detoxification](/source/Detoxification) [mechanisms](/source/Mechanism_(biology)) of metal ions.[3]

## Intelligent design

Chien is a fellow of the [Discovery Institute](/source/Discovery_Institute)'s [Center for Science and Culture](/source/Center_for_Science_and_Culture), hub of the [intelligent design movement](/source/Intelligent_design_movement).[1] Chien is described in the Discovery Institute's [Wedge document](/source/Wedge_document) as leading its "[Paleontology](/source/Paleontology) Research program",[4] in spite of the fact that, by his own admission, he has no credentials in the field.[5] He has translated several books by [intelligent design](/source/Intelligent_design) authors, such as [Phillip Johnson](/source/Phillip_E._Johnson)'s book *[Darwin on Trial](/source/Darwin_on_Trial)* and [Jonathan Wells](/source/Jonathan_Wells_(intelligent_design_advocate))' *[Icons of Evolution](/source/Icons_of_Evolution)*, into Chinese.[1]
