# Paul Chandelier

**Paul Jules Louis Chandelier** (23 January 1892 – 28 September 1983) was a French [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [forward](/source/Forward_(association_football)) for [Olympique Lillois](/source/Olympique_Lillois) and the [French national team](/source/France_national_football_team) between 1912 and 1914.[1][2][3][4]

## Playing career

### Club career

Born in [Hergnies](/source/Hergnies), [Nord](/source/Nord_(French_department)), on 23 January 1892, Chandelier began his career at Olympique Lillois at least since 1911, aged 19.[5] On 19 February 1911, OL defeated [RC Roubaix](/source/RC_Roubaix) 3–0 to clinch the [1911 USFSA Northern Championship](/source/USFSA_Football_Northern_Championship), which was the very first title in the club's history, thus finally putting an end to the invincibility of Roubaix and [US Tourquennoise](/source/US_Tourquennoise).[6]

Together with [Albert Eloy](/source/Albert_Eloy_(footballer,_born_1892)), [Paul Voyeux](/source/Paul_Voyeux), and [Alphonse Six](/source/Alphonse_Six), Chandelier was a member of the OL team that won back-to-back [USFSA Northern Championships](/source/USFSA_Football_Northern_Championship) in 1913 and 1914, winning the former with a record of 13 wins and only one defeat.[7] On 5 April 1914, Chandelier started in the final of the [USFSA National Championship](/source/1914_USFSA_Football_Championship), scoring twice to help his side to a 3–0 win over [Olympique de Cette](/source/FC_S%C3%A8te_34).[8] Two weeks later, on 19 April, he started in the semifinal of the [1914 Trophée de France](/source/1914_Troph%C3%A9e_de_France) in Roubaix, scoring a brace to help his side to a 4–1 win over [FEC Levallois](/source/FEC_Levallois).[9] In the final at the [Charentonneau](/source/Stade_de_Charentonneau) on 26 April, "Chandelier's virtuosity allows the Northerners to show their superiority", scoring the opening goal as his side claimed a 4–1 win over [VGA Médoc](/source/Vie_au_Grand_Air_du_M%C3%A9doc).[10]

### International career

On 23 March 1911, shortly after helping Lillois win its first-ever title, the [USFSA](/source/Union_des_Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9s_Fran%C3%A7aises_de_Sports_Athl%C3%A9tiques) selected the 19-year-old Chandelier to play an [unofficial match](/source/France_national_football_team_results_(unofficial_matches)#UIAFA) between [UIAFA](/source/UIAFA)'s France and [AFA](/source/Amateur_Football_Alliance)'s England at the [Parc de Princes](/source/Parc_de_Princes), which ended in a 1–3 loss.[5] He was then a member of the French squad that participated in the [1911 UIAFA European Football Tournament](/source/1911_UIAFA_European_Football_Tournament) at [Roubaix](/source/Roubaix), an unofficial European Championship organized by UIAFA, in which France was knocked out in the semifinals by [Bohemia](/source/Bohemia_and_Moravia_national_football_team), in which he scored a consolation goal with a beautiful shot from 25 meters in an eventual 1–4 loss.[5][11][12]

When the USFSA joined the [CFI](/source/French_Interfederal_Committee) in 1913, Chandelier finally became eligible to play for the official French national team, making his debut on 9 March, in a [friendly match](/source/Exhibition_game) against [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland_national_football_team) at [Geneva](/source/Geneva), scoring twice to help his side to a 4–1 win.[2][3][4] On 4 January 1914, Chandelier played for the so-called [*Lions des Flandres*](/source/Northern_France_football_team), a regional [scratch team](/source/Scratch_team) representing Northern France, in a friendly against the [Paris football team](/source/Paris_football_team); he scored the opening goal in an eventual 3–1 win.[13] He earned a further two [caps](/source/Cap_(sport)#Association_football) in 1914, against [Belgium](/source/Belgium_national_football_team) and [Italy](/source/Italy_national_football_team).[2][3][4]

## Later life and death

During the [First World War](/source/First_World_War), Chandelier and his OL teammate Eloy remained in their capacity as medical students, working as nurses at the Saint-Sauveur hospital in Lille, where they devoted themselves to relieving the suffering of their unfortunate fellow citizens under the German boot.[14] After the War, Chandelier worked as the head of the laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine of Lille.[15]

Chandelier died in [Lille](/source/Lille) on 28 September 1983, at the age of 91.[2][3]
