Cavonis was born in the [Hells Kitchen](/source/Hell's_Kitchen%2C_Manhattan) section of [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City). He is of [Greek](/source/Greeks) ancestry. He was drafted and served in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) in the period between the [Korean War](/source/Korean_War) and the full-scale escalation of the [Vietnam War](/source/Vietnam_War). Cavonis has said jokingly about his service in the Army that, “Not one [Viet Cong](/source/Viet_Cong) soldier invaded [Hawaii](/source/Hawaii) on my watch.”{{Citation needed|date=September 2009}}
