{{History of Portugal}}
The '''Patuleia''', '''Guerra da Patuleia''', or '''Little Civil War''' was a [civil war](/source/civil_war) in [Portugal](/source/Portugal) in 1846-47, so called to distinguish it from the 'great' civil war between [Pedro IV](/source/Pedro_IV_of_Portugal) and [Miguel I](/source/Miguel_I) (1828-1834). The Patuleia occurred after the [Revolution of Maria da Fonte](/source/Revolution_of_Maria_da_Fonte), and was closely associated with her. It was caused by the nomination, as a result of the [palace coup](/source/palace_coup) of 6 October 1846, known as the "[Emboscada](/source/Emboscada_(historical_event))", to set up a clearly [Cartista](/source/Cartista) government presided over by marshal [João Oliveira e Daun, Duke of Saldanha](/source/Jo%C3%A3o_Francisco_de_Saldanha_Oliveira_e_Daun%2C_1st_Duke_of_Saldanha).

The war lasted eight months, pitting the Cartistas (with the support of Queen [Maria II](/source/Maria_II_of_Portugal)) against an unnatural coalition of [Septembrists](/source/Septembrism) and [Miguelist](/source/Miguelist)s. The focus of resistance to the new government was the Septembrist 'Junta of [Porto](/source/Porto)', whose military leader, the [First Count of Bonfim](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Travassos_Valdez), was defeated by Marshal Saldanha at the siege of [Torres Vedras](/source/Torres_Vedras) on 22–23 December 1846, and sent into exile in [Angola](/source/Portuguese_Angola). Following the intervention of foreign military forces of the [Quadruple Alliance](/source/1834_Quadruple_Alliance), the war ended in a clear Cartista victory, resulting in the signing of the [Convention of Gramido](/source/Convention_of_Gramido) on 30 June 1847.
