**Patuakhali-1** is a constituency represented in the [Jatiya Sangsad](/source/Jatiya_Sangsad) (National Parliament) of [Bangladesh](/source/Bangladesh). The current [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament) in this constituency is [Altaf Hossain Chowdhury](/source/Altaf_Hossain_Chowdhury) of [Bangladesh Nationalist Party](/source/Bangladesh_Nationalist_Party).

## Boundaries

The constituency encompasses [Dumki](/source/Dumki_Upazila), [Mirzaganj](/source/Mirzaganj_Upazila) and [Patuakhali Sadar](/source/Patuakhali_Sadar_Upazila) upazilas.[1]

## History

The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973.

Ahead of the [2008 general election](/source/2008_Bangladeshi_general_election), the [Election Commission](/source/Bangladesh_Election_Commission) redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the [2001 Bangladesh census](/source/2001_Bangladesh_census).[2] The 2008 redistricting altered the boundaries of the constituency.[3]

Ahead of the [2014 general election](/source/2014_Bangladeshi_general_election), the Election Commission expanded the boundaries of the constituency. Previously it had excluded three [union parishads](/source/Union_parishad) of Patuakhali Sadar Upazila: Auliapur, Kamalapur, and Lohalia.[1][4][5]
