Ottaway graduated from [Oxford University](/source/University_of_Oxford), before undertaking a masters of [economic history](/source/economic_history) at [Leeds University](/source/University_of_Leeds). == Career ==

He became a senior project manager overseeing excavations in [York](/source/York). He was chairman of the [Council for British Archaeology](/source/Council_for_British_Archaeology) Yorkshire Group between 1997 and 2001.<ref name=":0" />
