# Patrick Kingsley

**Sir Patrick Graham Toler Kingsley** (12 May 1908 – 24 August 1999) served the [Duchy of Cornwall](/source/Duchy_of_Cornwall) for more than 40 years.

Kingsley was born in Calcutta, [Bengal](/source/Bengal), and educated at [Winchester College](/source/Winchester_College) where he played [cricket](/source/Cricket) for the school and was the only Wykehamist to have played five times in the annual match against [Eton](/source/Eton_College).[1] He then went up to [New College, Oxford](/source/New_College,_Oxford), where he played cricket for [Oxford University Cricket Club](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) for three seasons from 1928 to 1930 (captain in 1930), and then intermittently for amateur sides such as the [Free Foresters](/source/Free_Foresters).[2]

Kingsley was a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)). He played [Minor Counties](/source/Minor_Counties) cricket for [Dorset](/source/Dorset_County_Cricket_Club) in 1927 and thereafter to 1948 for [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire_County_Cricket_Club).

In 1930 Kingsley became assistant to Sir Clive Burn, Secretary and Keeper of the Records of the [Duchy of Cornwall](/source/Duchy_of_Cornwall); he succeeded Burn in that post in 1954 and served until 1972.[1]

He had been an army cadet at Winchester and subsequently joined the [Territorial Army](/source/Territorial_Army_(United_Kingdom));[3] during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) he served in the [Queen’s Royal Regiment](/source/Queen%E2%80%99s_Royal_Regiment) in Belgium and Germany.

Kingsley was appointed CVO in the [New Year Honours](/source/New_Year_Honours) of 1950[4] and knighted KCVO in 1962.[5]
