# Patrick Geraghty

**Patrick Geraghty** (February 4, 1843 - ?) was an American farmer and schoolteacher from [Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin](/source/Elkhart_Lake,_Wisconsin), who spent a single one-year term as a member of the [Wisconsin State Assembly](/source/Wisconsin_State_Assembly) from [Sheboygan County](/source/Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin).[1]

## Background

Geraghty was born in [Westport, County Mayo](/source/Westport,_County_Mayo), Ireland, on February 4, 1843. He moved with his parents to [Canada](/source/Canada), later to [Vermont](/source/Vermont) and in 1849 to [Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin](/source/Sheboygan_Falls,_Wisconsin), and finally from there to the [town](/source/Political_subdivisions_of_Wisconsin#Towns) of [Rhine](/source/Rhine,_Wisconsin) in 1851, where they settled. He received a common and [high school](/source/High_school) education, and became a farmer and schoolteacher.

## Public office

Geraghty was elected [justice of the peace](/source/Justice_of_the_peace) in 1866, and again in 1874; and was also clerk of his [school district](/source/School_district) for three terms. He was elected to the second Sheboygan County Assembly district ( the [Towns](/source/Political_subdivisions_of_Wisconsin#Towns) of [Greenbush](/source/Greenbush,_Wisconsin), Lyndon, Mitchell, [Plymouth](/source/Plymouth,_Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin), [Rhine](/source/Rhine,_Wisconsin) and [Russell](/source/Russell,_Sheboygan_County,_Wisconsin)) as a candidate of the [Reform Party](/source/Reform_Party_(19th-century_Wisconsin)) (a short-lived [coalition](/source/Coalition) of [Democrats](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)), [reform](/source/Reform) and [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Republican_Party_(United_States)) [Republicans](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)), and [Grangers](/source/The_National_Grange_of_the_Order_of_Patrons_of_Husbandry) formed in 1873, which secured the election of a [Governor of Wisconsin](/source/Governor_of_Wisconsin) and a number of state legislators) in 1874, with 850 votes, to 781 for Republican N. C. Harmon, succeeding fellow Reformer [Samuel D. Hubbard](/source/Samuel_Decius_Hubbard). He was assigned to the [standing committee](/source/Standing_committee) on [education](/source/Education).[2]

He was not a candidate for re-election in 1875, and was succeeded by Republican [William Noll](/source/William_Noll).
