**Patrick Connell** is an American diplomat who assumed the role of *[Chargé d’Affaires ad interim](/source/Charg%C3%A9_d'affaires_ad_interim)* at the [Embassy of the United States to the Holy See](/source/Embassy_of_the_United_States_to_the_Holy_See) under the [Biden administration](/source/Presidency_of_Joe_Biden) on January 20, 2021, succeeding former ambassador [Callista Gingrich](/source/Callista_Gingrich).[1] Connell is currently a career member of the [United States Foreign Service](/source/United_States_Foreign_Service) and previously served as [Deputy Chief of Mission](/source/Deputy_Chief_of_Mission) at the embassy from July 2020 until his promotion.

## Early life

Patrick Connell was born in [Westford, Massachusetts](/source/Westford,_Massachusetts). He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and English from [Villanova University](/source/Villanova_University) and a [Juris Doctor](/source/Juris_Doctor) from [Villanova University School of Law](/source/Villanova_University_School_of_Law).

## Awards

Connell has received several [State Department Superior](/source/Superior_Honor_Award) and [Meritorious Honor](/source/Meritorious_Honor_Award) Awards and was awarded the Sinclaire Language Award for Greek and Turkish in 2015.
