# Patrick's test

**Patrick's test** or **FABER test** is performed to evaluate pathology of the [hip](/source/Hip) joint or the [sacroiliac joint](/source/Sacroiliac_joint).[1]

The [test](/source/Medical_test) is performed by having the tested [leg](/source/Human_leg) [flexed](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_motion#Flexion_and_extension) and the [thigh](/source/Thigh) [abducted](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_motion#Abduction_and_adduction) and [externally rotated](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_motion#Rotation). If pain is elicited on the [ipsilateral](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_location#Medial_and_lateral) side [anteriorly](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_location#Anterior_and_posterior), it is suggestive of a hip joint disorder on the same side. If pain is elicited on the contralateral side [posteriorly](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_location#Anterior_and_posterior) around the sacroiliac joint, it is suggestive of pain mediated by dysfunction in that joint.[citation needed]
