# Patearoa

Patearoa Store and Post Office.

**Patearoa** is a small settlement in inland [Otago](/source/Otago) in [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand)'s [South Island](/source/South_Island). It is located 20 kilometres southwest of [Ranfurly](/source/Ranfurly%2C_New_Zealand), in the [Maniototo](/source/Maniototo) (the upper valley of the [Taieri River](/source/Taieri_River)) and was originally known as Sowburn. [Andrew Buchanan](/source/Andrew_Buchanan_(New_Zealand_politician)) was an early [runholder](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/runholder) in Patearoa.[1]
