**Pasquale Squitieri** (27 November 1938 – 18 February 2017[1]) was an Italian film director and screenwriter.

## Life and career

Born in [Naples](/source/Naples), Squitieri graduated in law, then was briefly involved in stage, as author ("*La battaglia*") and even actor (directed by [Francesco Rosi](/source/Francesco_Rosi)).[2] He made his film debut with *[Io e Dio](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Io_e_Dio&action=edit&redlink=1)*, produced by [Vittorio De Sica](/source/Vittorio_De_Sica), and, after two [Spaghetti Westerns](/source/Spaghetti_Western) he signed as **William Redford**, he focused on drama films centered on political and social issues.[2] Squitieri's film *[I Am the Law](/source/I_Am_the_Law_(1977_film))* won the [David di Donatello](/source/David_di_Donatello) for [Best Film](/source/David_di_Donatello_for_Best_Film) in 1978.[3] *[Li chiamarono... briganti!](/source/Li_chiamarono..._briganti!)*, a film about the brigand [Carmine Crocco](/source/Carmine_Crocco), was suspended from the cinemas and it is not available on the [home video](/source/Home_video) market. Squitieri was the partner of [Claudia Cardinale](/source/Claudia_Cardinale) since 1975.[2] His 1980 film *[Savage Breed](/source/Savage_Breed)* was entered into the [12th Moscow International Film Festival](/source/12th_Moscow_International_Film_Festival).[4] Since 2003, Squitieri had been romantically linked to actress and singer [Ottavia Fusco](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ottavia_Fusco&action=edit&redlink=1), whom he had married in December 2013.
