**Pascal blanc** is a white [French wine](/source/French_wine) [grape variety](/source/Grape_variety) grown in the [Provence](/source/Provence_(wine)) region of southern [France](/source/France). While once more widely planted, this ancient Provençal variety is nearly [extinct](/source/Extinct) with only a few plantings left in the *[Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée](/source/Appellation_d'Origine_Contr%C3%B4l%C3%A9e)* (AOC) region of [Cassis](/source/Cassis_(AOC)) and some [hectares](/source/Hectare) used for experimental *[vin de pays](/source/Vin_de_pays)*.[1]

## Viticulture

The southern France wine region of Cassis *(pictured)* is one of the few places in the world that is still growing Pascal blanc.

The Pascal blanc vine is extremely sensitive to many [grape diseases](/source/Grape_diseases), particularly [powdery mildew](/source/Powdery_mildew) and [grape rots](/source/Grape_rots).[1] It is best suited for dry climates with well drained soils that can minimize some of the risk of developing rot. In the Cassis region, the [vineyard soils](/source/Vineyard_soils) that Pascal blanc tend to be found in are almost always rocky and dry.[2]

## Synonyms

Over the years Pascal blanc and its wines have been known under a variety of synonyms including Brun Blanc, Jacobin violet, Ostertraube, Pascal, Pascaou Blanc, Plant Pascal and Plant Pascolu.[3]
