**Pascal Gallois** (born 1959) is a French [bassoonist](/source/Bassoonist), conductor and music teacher, specialising in [contemporary classical music](/source/Contemporary_classical_music).

## Life

Born in [Linselles](/source/Linselles) near [Lille](/source/Lille), Gallois studied with [Maurice Allard](/source/Maurice_Allard_(musician)) at the [École Normale de Musique de Paris](/source/%C3%89cole_Normale_de_Musique_de_Paris).[1] Since 1981, he has been a member of the [ensemble intercontemporain](/source/Ensemble_intercontemporain), soloist, alongside [Pierre Boulez](/source/Pierre_Boulez).[2] He brings to the ensemble contemporary works for bassoon, both original and French [premieres](/source/Premiere), as *[In Freundschaft](/source/In_Freundschaft)* by Karlheinz Stockhausen (recorded in 1984), and *Sequenza XII* by [Luciano Berio](/source/Luciano_Berio), in 1995.[3][4][5][6] As a conductor, he has conducted, among other things, of the [Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain](/source/Ensemble_Orchestral_Contemporain).[7]

The development of the contemporary bassoon repertoire is one of his concerns. Composers such as [György Kurtag](/source/Gy%C3%B6rgy_Kurtag), [Olga Neuwirth](/source/Olga_Neuwirth), [Philippe Fénelon](/source/Philippe_F%C3%A9nelon), [Brice Pauset](/source/Brice_Pauset), [Toshio Hosokawa](/source/Toshio_Hosokawa) and [Mark Andre](/source/Mark_Andre) write pieces for him which he creates and records.[3]

From 1994 to 2000, he was professor at the Paris Conservatory and from 2001 to 2007 at the [Zurich University of the Arts](/source/Zurich_University_of_the_Arts). He is also the author of *Die Spieltechnik des Fagotts* (*The Bassoon Playing Technique*), devoted to new playing techniques for bassoonists and composers. Since 2002, he has been teaching at the [International Music Institute](/source/Darmst%C3%A4dter_Ferienkurse) of [Darmstadt](/source/Darmstadt).[3]

Gallois is the father of the dancer and choreographer [Jann Gallois](/source/Jann_Gallois).
