**Pascal Gabriel** (born 15 December 1956) also known as **Stubbleman**, is a [Belgian](/source/Belgium)-born record producer, songwriter and musician based in [London](/source/London), England and [Provence](/source/Provence), France.

As a songwriter he was co-written for such artists as *[Dido](/source/Dido_(singer))* and *[Kylie Minogue](/source/Kylie_Minogue)* and *[Will Young](/source/Will_Young)*

## Music career: Background

Pascal Gabriel's musical career began in 1977 in the [punk rock](/source/Punk_rock) band *The Razors* on [bass guitar](/source/Bass_guitar).

He left Belgium for [London](/source/London) in 1979. During the early 1980s, he had spells in various experimental groups, including art-school band *Church of Friendly Valley* with [scratch video](/source/Scratch_video) artist [George Barber](/source/George_Barber_(artist)), and an electronic project whose only performance was in a supermarket.

He formed a duo with guitarist [Danny Kustow](/source/Danny_Kustow), as well as touring as a percussionist with the [Tom Robinson Band](/source/Tom_Robinson_Band), before starting to pick up work as a [freelance](/source/Freelance) sound engineer in various London studios, earning a reputation for innovative [remixes](/source/Remix) for artists such as [Marc Almond](/source/Marc_Almond) ([Soft Cell](/source/Soft_Cell)) and [Yello](/source/Yello). In 1983 he had his first release, with two experimental tracks on the [Touch](/source/Touch_Music) cassette *T2 Meridians One*,[1] alongside future collaborator [Simon Fisher Turner](/source/Simon_Fisher_Turner), before beginning to concentrate on studio work.

## Producing and writing

Toward the end of the 1980s, Gabriel was producer and co-writer for [S'Express](/source/S'Express), with [House](/source/House_music) DJ [Mark Moore](/source/Mark_Moore),[2] and [Bomb the Bass](/source/Bomb_the_Bass), with [Hip-Hop](/source/Hip_hop_music) DJ [Tim Simenon](/source/Tim_Simenon)[3] — two of the first [sample](/source/Sampling_(music))-heavy dancefloor artists of that era. He claimed a number one UK single with the S'Express track "[Theme from S'Express](/source/Theme_from_S'Express)"[4] and a number two with Bomb the Bass' "[Beat Dis](/source/Beat_Dis)."

Following the success of S'Express and Bomb the Bass, Gabriel embarked on a series of projects, [mixing](/source/Audio_mixing_(recorded_music)), [producing](/source/Record_producer) and writing with a variety of artists, including [Claudia Brücken](/source/Claudia_Br%C3%BCcken) (formerly of [Propaganda](/source/Propaganda_(band))), [Wire](/source/Wire_(band)), and [Debbie Harry](/source/Debbie_Harry) from [Blondie](/source/Blondie_(band)).

In the 1990s, he moved into indie and pop music, collaborating with [EMF](/source/EMF_(band)), [Inspiral Carpets](/source/Inspiral_Carpets), [Kitchens of Distinction](/source/Kitchens_of_Distinction), [Billy Mackenzie](/source/Billy_Mackenzie) and [Siouxsie Sioux](/source/Siouxsie_Sioux)'s second group [The Creatures](/source/The_Creatures).

From 1996 to 1998 he wrote, produced and performed with the [Mute Records](/source/Mute_Records)-signed band [Peach](/source/Peach_(pop_band)) (known as "Peach Union" in the U.S.). Their song "On My Own" was featured prominently in the film *[Sliding Doors](/source/Sliding_Doors)*.[5]

Gabriel subsequently wrote and produced with a host of popular artists, including the then unsigned singer [Dido](/source/Dido_(singer)) (with whom he wrote several songs: "I'm No Angel" and "[Here with Me](/source/Here_with_Me_(Dido_song))" from her multi-million selling debut album *[No Angel](/source/No_Angel_(album))*), [Kylie Minogue](/source/Kylie_Minogue) (including "Your Love" for her album *[Fever](/source/Fever_(Kylie_Minogue_album))*), [Dot Allison](/source/Dot_Allison), [Natalie Imbruglia](/source/Natalie_Imbruglia), [Rachel Stevens](/source/Rachel_Stevens), [Sophie Ellis-Bextor](/source/Sophie_Ellis-Bextor), [Skye Edwards](/source/Skye_Edwards) ([Morcheeba](/source/Morcheeba)), [Bebel Gilberto](/source/Bebel_Gilberto) and many others.

He collaborated extensively with [Miss Kittin](/source/Miss_Kittin), co-writing and producing her solo album *[BatBox](/source/BatBox)*, and with New Zealand star [Ladyhawke](/source/Ladyhawke_(musician)), penning and producing five tracks on her debut album, *[Ladyhawke](/source/Ladyhawke_(Ladyhawke_album))* (including the singles "[My Delirium](/source/My_Delirium)", "[Dusk Till Dawn](/source/Dusk_Till_Dawn_(Ladyhawke_song))", and "[Magic](/source/Magic_(Ladyhawke_song))") and the whole of her second album *[Anxiety](/source/Anxiety_(Ladyhawke_album))*,[6] which he also mixed, in 2012.

Around the same time he co-wrote "Tune Into My Heart" on [Little Boots](/source/Little_Boots)' début album *[Hands](/source/Hands_(Little_Boots_album))*, carried out additional production on [Goldfrapp](/source/Goldfrapp)'s fifth album, *[Head First](/source/Head_First_(Goldfrapp_album))*, and co-wrote and produced three tracks on [Marina and the Diamonds](/source/Marina_and_the_Diamonds) 2010 album *[The Family Jewels](/source/The_Family_Jewels_(Marina_and_the_Diamonds_album))*, and the song "Can't Beat the Feeling" on [Kylie Minogue](/source/Kylie_Minogue)'s 2010 UK number one *[Aphrodite](/source/Aphrodite_(Kylie_Minogue_album))* album.

He co-wrote several tracks with Will Young for his 2011 UK number one album *[Echoes](/source/Echoes_(Will_Young_album))*, including the single "Losing Myself", recorded in his studios in London and France, and co-wrote the single "The Apple" with [VV Brown](/source/VV_Brown).

After writing several tracks with [The Temper Trap](/source/The_Temper_Trap) for their *[Thick as Thieves](/source/Thick_as_Thieves_(The_Temper_Trap_album))* album in 2015, he produced Australian songstress [Emma Louise](/source/Emma_Louise)'s 2016 album *Supercry*.[7]

## Solo career as Stubbleman

In 2018, Gabriel developed a solo project, 'Stubbleman'. A return to his electronic and ambient roots, it combines a cinematic mixture of found sounds and field recordings with modular synthesizers and live piano. Stubbleman's debut album, *Mountains and Plains*, inspired by a road trip across the US, was released on [Marc Hollander](/source/Marc_Hollander)'s cult Belgian indie label [Crammed Discs](/source/Crammed_Discs) in April 2019,[8] to positive reviews in the UK,[9] and internationally.[10]

His live shows in November at the From the Source festival at Warwick Arts Centre and the Purcell Room in London's SouthBank Centre, as part of the EFJ London Jazz Festival,[11] involved extensive use of self-made [automatons](/source/Automaton): glockenspiels, vibraphones and xylophones. On 5 June 2020, he released an EP, *The Blackbird Tapes*,[12] on Crammed Discs, inspired by birdsong during the [Coronavirus lockdown](/source/Coronavirus_lockdown) in London during spring 2020.
