The '''Partnach Formation''' is a [Middle Triassic](/source/Middle_Triassic) [geologic formation](/source/Formation_(geology)) in the eastern [Northern Limestone Alps](/source/Northern_Limestone_Alps) and [Western Carpathians](/source/Western_Carpathians), within [Austria](/source/Austria) and [Slovakia](/source/Slovakia), [Central Europe](/source/Central_Europe).<ref name=gbooks>[https://books.google.com/books?id=0KXptTYvKv8C&dq=%27Wetterstein+Formation&pg=PA790  Google Books: ''The Geology of Central Europe: Mesozoic and Cenozoic'']; edited by Tom McCann; pgs. 790-795.</ref> The formation consists of alternating grey and green [marl](/source/marl)s and [shale](/source/shale)s (Partnach shales) and grey limestones (Partnach Limestone), often [breccia](/source/breccia)ted, [oncolithic](/source/Oncolite) and containing clay [intraclasts](/source/intraclasts).<ref>Tollmann, A., 1976: Analyse des klassischen nordalpinen Mesozoikums, Wien, Franz Deuticke, 580 pp.</ref> The formation is gradually evolving from the [Reifling Formation](/source/Reifling_Formation). It is usually overlain by the [Lunz/Reibl Formation](/source/Lunz_Formation) or [Wetterstein Formation](/source/Wetterstein_Formation). Sediments of the Partnach Formation were deposited in intrashelf [basin](/source/Sedimentary_basin)s.

The rock unit was originally defined as ''Partnachschichten'' by [Wilhelm von Gümbel](/source/Wilhelm_von_G%C3%BCmbel) in 1858.
