## History and notable features

Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 [Centennial Exhibition](/source/Centennial_Exhibition). It is a [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) Historic District with many examples of [Victorian architecture](/source/Victorian_architecture), some well-preserved, others in poor condition. The neighborhood was populated by [German Americans](/source/German_American), followed by [Eastern European](/source/Eastern_European) [Jews](/source/Jew), before becoming heavily [African American](/source/African_American) after [World War II](/source/World_War_II). (Directly after World War II it was home to many displaced persons from Eastern Europe, which included Latvians.)[3]

In 2008, a shopping mall called the Park West Town Village Shopping Center was completed. Its anchor stores are [Shop Rite](/source/ShopRite_(United_States)), [Lowe's](/source/Lowe's), [McDonald's](/source/McDonald's), and CW Price. It is located on North 52nd Street.

Parkside is the home of the Evans Recreation Center. In 2014, the [Philly Pumptrack](/source/Philly_Pumptrack) opened at Evans.[4]

Parkside was the early home of [gangsta rapper](/source/Gangsta_rap) [Schoolly D](/source/Schoolly_D), and was referenced in his songs "PSK" (Park Side Killers) and "Parkside 5-2".
