The '''Panke''' ({{IPA|de|ˈpaŋkə|-|LL-Q188 (deu)-Sebastian Wallroth-Panke.wav}}) is a small [river](/source/river) in [Brandenburg](/source/Brandenburg) and [Berlin](/source/Berlin), a right [tributary](/source/tributary) of the [Spree](/source/Spree_(river)), originating from the [Barnim plateau](/source/Barnim_Plateau). It has a length of 29 km, of which 20,2 are within the area of Berlin. Consequently, the Panke is the third longest river in the city after the Spree and the [Havel](/source/Havel_River). Several areas in Berlin and Brandenburg are named after the Panke, including [Pankow](/source/Pankow) and [Panketal](/source/Panketal).

==Course==
It is {{convert|29|km|abbr=on}} in length with its source in the northeast of [Bernau bei Berlin](/source/Bernau_bei_Berlin). The headwaters were overbuilt with the construction of the [railway from Berlin to Stettin](/source/Berlin%E2%80%93Szczecin_railway) in 1842, today the Panke waters leak beneath the railroad embankment. The river flows southwestwards parallel to the railway line through the Bernau town centre and reaches the municipal border with [Panketal](/source/Panketal), underpassing the [Bundesautobahn 11](/source/Bundesautobahn_11).

South of Panketal, the river crosses the border of Brandenburg with Berlin, where it traverses the [Pankow](/source/Pankow) borough from north to south, running through the locality of [Buch](/source/Buch_(Berlin)), where it underpasses the [Bundesautobahn 10](/source/Bundesautobahn_10) (''Berliner Ring'') and forms the border with the Berlin locality of [Karow](/source/Karow_(Berlin)) and the western border of Karow and [Blankenburg](/source/Blankenburg_(Berlin)) with [Französisch Buchholz](/source/Franz%C3%B6sisch_Buchholz). Joined by the [Schmöckpfuhlgraben](/source/Schm%C3%B6ckpfuhlgraben) ditch the Panke runs between the [Pankow](/source/Pankow_(locality)) and [Niederschönhausen](/source/Niedersch%C3%B6nhausen) localities through the gardens of [Schönhausen Palace](/source/Sch%C3%B6nhausen_Palace) and passes [Majakowskiring](/source/Majakowskiring).

The final stretches of the lower Panke run through Berlin's [inner city](/source/inner_city) districts of [Gesundbrunnen](/source/Gesundbrunnen_(Berlin)) and [Wedding](/source/Wedding_(Berlin)), where it is canalised and partly [underground](/source/Subterranean_river). Pedestrian walkways run alongside the river -or near it- for lengthy stretches. Nowadays it has two mouths, a northern one into the ''Nordhafen'' port of the [Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal](/source/Berlin-Spandau_Ship_Canal), and another, considerably smaller one directly into the [Spree](/source/Spree_(river)) River in [Mitte](/source/Mitte_(locality)) close to the [Berliner Ensemble](/source/Berliner_Ensemble) theater. The Mitte section behind the ''[Bundesnachrichtendienst](/source/Bundesnachrichtendienst)'' (BND) headquarters (the former site of the ''[Stadion der Weltjugend](/source/Stadion_der_Weltjugend)'') is currently renaturated as an [urban park](/source/urban_park) component.
