## Name

Pangyo is derived from a wide plank bridge over the river Unjungcheon, which flows east from the foot of Guksabong and ends in [Tancheon](/source/Tancheon). Residents originally called it Neoldari (널다리), which gradually changes to Neodeuri (너더리), and in *[hanja](/source/Hanja)* it is written as '板橋',[4] which became the name of the place, sharing its etymology with [Itabashi](/source/Itabashi) in [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo), [Japan](/source/Japan), as well as [Banqiao District](/source/Banqiao_District) in [New Taipei City](/source/New_Taipei_City) of [Taiwan](/source/Taiwan); for the latter, the pronunciation of Banqiao in [Taiwanese Hokkien](/source/Taiwanese_Hokkien) ([Pe̍h-ōe-jī](/source/Pe%CC%8Dh-%C5%8De-j%C4%AB): *Pang-kiô*) is extremely similar to Pangyo.
