# Panama Formation

The **Panama Formation** (Tp)[1] is a [geologic formation](/source/Formation_(geology)) in [Panama](/source/Panama). The formation consists of [tuffaceous](/source/Tuff)[2] [sandstones](/source/Sandstone), [conglomerates](/source/Conglomerate_(geology)), tuffaceous [shales](/source/Shale) and [algal](/source/Algae) and [foraminifera](/source/Foraminifera)-rich [limestones](/source/Limestone),[1] and preserves [bivalve](/source/Bivalve) [fossils](/source/Fossils) of *[Leopecten gatunensis](/source/Leopecten_gatunensis)* and *[Nodipecten sp.](/source/Nodipecten)* and dates back to the [Late Oligocene](/source/Late_Oligocene) [period](/source/Period_(geology)).[3]
