'''Palmaiola''' is an islet located in the middle of Piombino Channel, at {{convert|3|km}} from Elba and {{convert|7|km}} from [Piombino](/source/Piombino); it is part of the [comune](/source/comune) of [Rio Marina](/source/Rio_Marina) and is wholly owned by the State.

==Geography==
In the 14th century it was named ''Insulam Palmarole'' because of the abundance of the [Mediterranean dwarf palm](/source/chamaerops) at that time. Palmaiola has rocky and craggy cliffs and has a triangular shape; it is 461 metres long, 396 metres wide, 85 metres high and has 1.7 km of coast. It is integrated in the [European Union](/source/European_Union) [Special Protection Area](/source/Special_Protection_Area) as [Site of Community Importance](/source/Site_of_Community_Importance) and it is part of the [Arcipelago Toscano National Park](/source/Arcipelago_Toscano_National_Park).

==Fauna==
Palmaiola has the advantage of having inaccessible cliffs and a bushy and low vegetation as the [garrigue](/source/garrigue), formed by [evergreen](/source/evergreen) plants. Consequently, the [European shag](/source/European_shag), the [Scopoli's shearwater](/source/Scopoli's_shearwater), the [Falco peregrinus](/source/Falco_peregrinus_brookei), and the [Audouin's gull](/source/Audouin's_gull) find it a safe place to nest. Another [endemic](/source/endemic) species on the islet is the [European leaf-toed gecko](/source/European_leaf-toed_gecko).<ref>{{Natura 2000|num=IT5160011 |desc=Isole di Cerboli e Palmaiola}}</ref>

The [Pisans](/source/Pisans) built in 909C.E. a tower restored by the Appiano of the [Principality](/source/Principality) of [Piombino](/source/Piombino) in 1534; a new lighthouse and the [keeper](/source/lighthouse_keeper)’s house were built on 15 January 1844 and were operated by the Civil engineering for the Maritime Works; in 1911 it was transferred to the [Regia Marina](/source/Regia_Marina) Lighthouse Service. The lighthouse consists of a one-story white building, 14 metres high, surmounted by a quadrangular tower with balcony and lantern situated at a height of 105 [metres above sea level](/source/metres_above_sea_level). It is fully automated, active and operated by [Marina Militare](/source/Marina_Militare) identified by the code number 2016 E.F. Near the building a [helipad](/source/helipad) was erected which is utilized by the Marina Militare [EH-101](/source/EH-101) to fly in regularly the maintenance team. It has a [solar power](/source/solar_power) unit and emits an alternating [single white flashing](/source/Light_characteristic) in a five seconds period visible up to 10 [nautical mile](/source/nautical_mile)s.<ref>[http://www.marina.difesa.it/storiacultura/fari/Pagine/2016.aspx Isolotto di Palmaiola] Marina Militare</ref><ref>[http://www.marina.difesa.it/conosciamoci/editoria/notiziario/Pagine/2012_10.aspx Attività operativa.pdf] Marina Militare</ref>
